Mustangs Finish 2nd at 2023 OUA Fencing Championship

The 2023 OUA Fencing Championship held in St. Catharines, ON was a great showcase of the finest athletes in the region. The Western Mustangs, who put up a brave fight, walked away with two team silver medals. In addition, they won three individual event medals, including two silver medals and a bronze medal.

Lily Liu put up a sterling performance in the Women's Sabre individual event and clinched the silver medal. Steven Zhang also put up a great fight in the Men's Foil individual event and won the silver medal. Meanwhile, Serena Fang won the bronze medal in the Women's Foil individual event.

In the team relays, Western picked up four medals. The Mustangs Women's foil team showed tremendous grit and determination in the team relays. Although Toronto narrowly defeated them 43-41 in the Women's Foil team relay final, Serena Fang, Jessica Jia, Lydia Tzianas, and Robin Wang claimed the silver medal, putting on an impressive display! The Women's Sabre team also took home a silver medal, while the Women's Epee and Men's Foil teams took home bronze medals.

Despite not winning the championship, the Mustangs put up a relentless battle in the women's team event, finishing with 310 points to clinch the silver medal. Toronto emerged as the champions with 402 points.

The team relay OUA All-Stars for each event were also recognized, with Jessica Jia from Western making it to the Women's Foil team. With such results, the Mustangs can be proud of their performance at the championship and can look forward to the future with optimism! Congratulations to all the athletes who participated in the event!

Mustangs Bring Home Gold, Silver, and Bronze From The Queen's Open

The Western Fencing team kicked off their season with a bang at the Queen's Open last weekend! The dynamic trio of Nicola Cheng, Oscar Qi, and Stephanie Ng took home one medal each, with Nicola winning gold in Women's Epee, Oscar earning silver in Men's Foil, and Stephanie taking home bronze in Women's Foil.

The rest of the team brought their A-game too, with top 10 finishes from Cliff Wang in Men's Foil, Rick Wu in Men's Epee, Austen Wong in Men's Sabre, and Stephanie Ng in Women's Epee.

Two new recruits made their fencing debut and absolutely shined. Armin Yousefi won his bout and had a solid showing, coming in 38/43 in Men's Sabre, while Ali Naeij was a force to be reckoned with, getting hits in all his pool bouts and coming close to defeating the 21st ranked fencer in the DEs with a 14-14 tie, ending up 44/46 in Men's Epee.

The team is now gearing up for their next tournament, the RMC Team Invitational on Nov 5-6, 2022. Get ready, fencing fans, the Western Fencing team is coming to conquer!
